Another thing about Death by a Thousand Cuts that people don’t catch onto is that she is singing saying goodbye is like death by a thousand cuts. She’s saying that we have to say goodbye so many times and every time it hurts and I have to do it too many times so that it’s like I’m dying from it. She isn’t singing “our relationship died.” She’s saying it feels like this sometimes because this is hard. ‘The morning comes and you’re not my baby’ because their relationship only exists in the dark and they have to part whenever the light shines on them. Saying goodbye over and over again. And they also ignore that when she says “calm my fears with the touch of your hand” she’s saying this song is about her fears of not being able to make it through this difficult situation, but they are just fears and her lover is able to calm her down. People have no eye for nuance and context and metaphor, which is a pity because Taylor’s lyrics are full of this.
